Journalist fellows @risj_oxford are enthralled by @fannyfroman this morning explaining how she launched Lasten Uutiset, a *profitable* newscast and paper for children with zero advertising.
Fanny: 'We have to explain the news in layers. When we wrote about Elon Musk becoming the richest man, we had to also explain: what is a stock, where do you buy one, why do they go up and down?'
The 24-page paper is weekly, costs the same as a Netflix subscription, and is marketed to parents using telemarketing. There's also a newscast, shown in schools, and YouTube and SnapChat channels.
They have "foreign correspondents": children living overseas who explain what life is like there. And they send some of their pint-sized readers books and movies to review.
Fanny: 'We don't use the word "children" - we say "people in primary school". You don't have to write about them as children, you write about them as people.'
Fanny: 'It's really hard for children to understand the difference between a journalist and someone creating content on YouTube. I have to explain to them [that I am not an influencer who gets free stuff].'
