This whole thread is hard truths but may I add something to this? There’s huge double standards in judging Makoto’s mistakes and actions compared to the other characters. Thread incoming because I need to vent about this. https://twitter.com/existentlqueer/status/1354291546431119360
1) “she opposes the pt to expose them!!”
Yeah? As literally everyone else does before joining the team? Yusuke threatens to sue them, Futaba blackmails them into helping her, Haru refuses to talk to them bc of Mona and well. We all know what Goro is there for.

Being a nuisance to the group is a step literally everyone took before joining!! But strangely enough NO ONE is given hell for that as much as Makoto is.
2) I feel people tends to forget that Makoto lived with only Sae as her parental figure for years. Imagine living in a house with Sae Niijima and not picking up her worst behaviour. Sae is the only model Makoto has, and she puts her younger sister under a huge amount of pressure
So I think it’s at least understandable if Makoto is strict, direct, and insufferable at first. Sae literally pushed her into being like that, the whole school pushed her into being like that. Why does the sympathy for bad family dynamics exist for all the pt but not for Makoto?
3) Is totally fine disliking a character, but please remember that:
- the writers are responsible for bad writing and inconsistencies, not the character
- on average, there’s something good in every character
- you shouldn’t twist how the game works to suit your personal take?

Most of the confidants aren’t related to plot progression. Makoto’s confidant isn’t related to plot progression. So complaining how she want to enter the police system after what they did to Joker is completely ignoring how the game manages its confidants.
Do we want to discuss about how P5 could handle better its confidant by relating them to the plot and the themes? Great! But please don’t involve a single character like it’s their personal fault if the game fails at consistency sometimes

I’ll end this by saying: disliking a character is valid, wanting to have nothing to do with them is also fine, dunking on a character for the sake of it... well, maybe don’t do that in public? Rant about them with your friends?
It’s not pleasant to browse shuake arts/tweets (and yes, it’s mainly a shuake fandom problem) and find countless little comments or tweets about how much ppl can’t stand Makoto/ wished she didn’t exist etc. It’s very exhausting tbh
