New to Clubhouse?

I’ve been using the app for a few months & it’s becoming a fast favorite once I changed how I used the app.

Here’s a few of my favorite tips for getting started.

• A thread •
Follow the Community Club and join a welcome/beginner session.

My favorite moderators are @edaz @9AM_InLondon (Abraxas) & @ThomasJ_

They do a fabulous job introducing the basics, explaining the app & answering questions!
Decide what you want to get out of the app & look for people that fit your goal.

Do you want to connect with others in your field? Do you love comedy?

Use the search bar to look up keywords & find people to follow.

When people you follow join a room, you’ll see that room.
Find clubs to follow

Use the search bar or visiting peoples profiles & scroll to the bottom to see what clubs they’re a member of.

Click the circles, read the descriptions & follow clubs that pique your interest. Future events will be your upcoming events notification bar.
This tip singlehandedly changed my entire experience on the app.

Plan your time on the app around scheduled events.

The rooms in your hallway can be hit or miss, so this approach lets you plan your time around convos you want to join.
Do you have a name that’s difficult to pronounce?

Add it to your bio! Experienced moderators know to click on people’s bio’s to see if there’s information on how to pronounce your name.

Here’s mine:
🔈Mar-ee, similar to calamari
Do you want to add line breaks to your bio?

Write your desired bio in Notes on your phone, with line breaks included, then copy it into your bio by double clicking & pasting.

Remember that you bio preview only displays the first three lines. So make it count.
Join the weekly Clubhouse Town Halls, every Sunday morning at 9am PST.

Founder @pdavison’s energy is infectious! Paul & the @joinClubhouse team share the latest updates, what they’re working on & their thoughts.

These chats get me pumped up about the app every time.
Are you seeing super spammy rooms?

Swipe right to hide the room & it disappears from your hallway.

The team mentioned they’re working on algorithms to personalize your experience moving forward but fit now, it’s an easy way to get rid of rooms you don’t want to see.
Curate who you follow (Part 1)

You’ll see the rooms that people you follow are in. Sometimes your spammy rooms are because if your followers.

Click the 9 dot icon on your main screen. It will show you the rooms that the people you follow are currently in.
Curate who you follow (Part 2)

See a spammy room title? Take note of the person’s name. Use the search bar to look them up & unfollow them.

It’s a bit manual & cumbersome but works well to clean up the rooms you’ll see in your hallway.
Don’t want to miss a scheduled chat?

Click on the calendar icon on your home screen to see pre-scheduled events.

Click the bell icon to follow the speakers & get notified when the chat starts

OR

Click on the option to add a calendar invite to either Google or Apple calendar
Join different sized rooms

I love a chat with @pmarca & other amazing speakers but you’re a passive listener with thousands of others.

My favorite rooms are those with a small group, where I can be an active participant & truly connect with others.

Find what works for you.
What’s that icon on my picture when I’m a newbie & when does it go away?

The Clubhouse team calls it a party hat & you’ll have it for the first seven days you’re on the app.

It’s meant to signal to members that you’re new so people (and moderators) can give you a warm welcome.
I see speakers muting & unmuting a bunch of times, what does that mean?

That’s the unofficial way that people clap for a speaker on Clubhouse.

If a speaker says something others resonate with, you’ll see people mute & unmute quickly so their mute sign blinks.
Don’t forget to add your Twitter or Instagram handle to your profile.

There’s no DM capabilities on Clubhouse just yet.

Add your social handles so that people can reach out or even just learn more about you!
Profile image consistency

If you want to connect with people you already know on Twitter or Instagram, make sure you have the same profile picture.

Whether someone is looking you up or due to a Clubhouse suggestion, it’s easier to recognize you if you have the same picture.
You can follow @maripullen.
