We keep hearing a lot about monotheism.

But monotheism was only born out of polytheism. Ancient Israelite monotheist was born out of a Polytheist Pantheon that worshiped El, Yahweh, Baal and Asherah along with others.

It took several hundreds of years for monotheism to emerge
Once monotheism took birth, it wasted no time in launching attacking against the very Israelite polytheism from which it was born.

The entire old testament is a documentation of this struggle. The end result is that Israelite polytheism does not exist anymore.
It ceased existing 2000 years ago. At one point, there was hardly anything to differentiate between the Israelite polytheism and the emerging monotheism. Monotheism was born out of it. And the child was responsible for the dεath of its mother
