// A THREAD//
I grew up bilingually, but have the feeling that ’m still learning both my "native" languages.

I have learnt additional languages since, but that makes things even more difficult!

Mixing up words is normal!

I make mistakes and have to forgive myself. Constantly!
1. UNCOMFORTABLE PATIENCE
Once you can string a few sentences together and speak with someone, it does open new doors for you.

But the more you learn, the more complicated it gets.

A feeling lurks that there is even more to learn.

Uncomfortable becomes your friend.
1. (Cont) UNCOMFORTABLE PATIENCE:

It simply requires patience.

It takes dedication, discipline, grit and much repetition.

You are really progressing constantly.
2. UNDERSTANDING: A foreign language improves the understanding of your own language too.

At first you translate word for word.

But before you know it, you’re almost thinking in the language.

When you dream in it, you step into a completely new realm.

You're almost fluent!
3. HUMILITY: You have to listen and understand before you can answer.

Speaking is much harder than listening.

Even if you think you know how to say something, you may not be understood.

Humble is your second name!
4. FAILURE: You have to be prepared to fail, repeatedly make mistakes, be laughed at and misunderstood.

Nobody said it's easy.

You feel like a complete dunce sometimes.

You take it all in your stride and strive to get better.

It’s part of the learning process!
5. CONFIDENCE: is key in advancing in language learning.

You have to trust yourself.

Everyday spent practising the language, improves your skill.

When you are ok with making a fool of yourself & you accept it, that’s when you make real progress.

It's half the battle.
6. ACCEPTANCE: You hang on to simple ways of saying things.

The path of least resistance to make yourself understood.

There is always someone better than you.

You will be envious. Accept it.

Because there are also others who are further behind. Be proud & accept it too.
7. FLEXIBILITY: You are forced to change the way you communicate.

When you speak another language you are changing your thinking.

It's language driven.

You construct new neural pathways in your brain.

You simply adapt.
