I appreciate the Redditors' short squeeze attempts here and they look wildly successful but there's something to keep in mind: It's not unusual for hedge funds to take both sides of a trade. So they may be buying Gamestop too.
For one thing, HFs move fast and their algorithms sense any changes in stocks rapidly. It's unlikely they would be surprised by a market movement. For another, HFs and banks track social media and message boards for stock discussion. So they would have heard the chatter early.
Don't get me wrong, the street justice of this thing is beautiful. But it's still Wall Street and the house always wins, so it's hard to believe the HFs are hurting. For every short trade that needed to be covered, they probably had another trader going long (buying the stock).
The hedge fund obsession with nailing stock trades in milliseconds is so intense that they literally built servers next to stock exchanges so the information wouldn't have to travel down longer fiber-optic cables. Hard to knock these guys off their game.
I should note: I'm not talking about Melvin Capital, which no one cares about and fewer have even heard of. I mean the big hedge funds who are fine to make any trade no matter who it kills.
I think most people who know Wall Street and stock trading think the Redditors' trolling is hilarious and perfect, bc professional traders do things like this all the time and Wall Street is just pure chaotic bro energy, so they've met their match.

Like I said. These investment firms move fast and they can and will play all sides of a trade. For anyone to assume that "good guys are long and bad guys are short" is a mistake. The "bad guys" will be long, short and upside down if it means making a profit. https://twitter.com/arashmassoudi/status/1355473645875945473
This is a good thread that talks a bit more about this concept of "the house always wins" https://twitter.com/sruhle/status/1355578754685423616
