THREAD: The UCP government is pushing ahead with their plan to create a new police force that no one is asking for and will only increase costs for Albertans.

Now, the RCMP members have come out against the UCP plan.

We understand the concerns Albertans have about crime in their communities, including in rural Alberta. We’ve heard terrible stories of Albertans being victimized. And the pandemic has only made it worse.

We must do more to keep Albertans safe.

In Government, we invested in crime prevention, including $10M directly into rural communities to add police and other supports. The UCP took a different approach, downloading costs onto Alberta families and municipalities through their new police funding model.

Further, there is clear evidence that ending the contract with the RCMP will mean the province would have to pick up the cost sharing portion from the federal government – further increasing costs on Albertans.

The UCP must stop this ridiculous plan.

Now, the National Police Federation representing 20,000 frontline RCMP members has come out against the UCP plan and have launched a campaign called Keep Alberta RCMP, which pointed out that the move to a provincial police force will cost Albertans an additional $112M.

The Keep Alberta RCMP website states, “At a time when Alberta’s economy is facing significant challenges due to the impacts of COVID-19 and uncertain natural resource markets, now is not the time to proceed with unnecessary and costly changes to our policing model.”

The Alberta NDP Caucus and I agree with the RCMP on this.

Enough is enough, let’s bring Albertans together and support each other in this difficult time, not play partisan politics and further divide ourselves.
