Senate Republicans might be thinking that the politically safe move would be to try to figure out a way - any possible way - to avoid convicting Trump.

I think they’re overlooking some things.
@SenateGOP
Unlike the first impeachment trial, in this trial, the evidence of Trump’s guilt isn’t going to somehow be too intellectually challenging for the average person to grasp (not that the last one should have been either. But, anyway ...)

And there could be witnesses.
The people who were involved in the assault on the Capitol keep getting scooped up left and right by the feds. More stories are going to get published showing how this whole thing came together. This will likely look worse, not better, as time goes on.
So-called “conventional wisdom” may be that the GOP didn’t do as badly as expected in Congressional races in 2020.

But they lost the Senate. And they will be defending more seats than Democrats will in 2022. Three of them are retiring - from states where Dems have some chance. https://twitter.com/thevaluesvoter/status/1354084147652911111
We are going to learn more about things Trump did while in office. And most of it is not going to be good. Or make anybody who is allied with him or who continues to defend him look good. It’s like a ticking time bomb which everybody with any common sense knows is going to blow.
These guys have the opportunity of freeing both their own legacies and their party, at least to a degree, from Trump.

But they’re too afraid to do it. And they are going to get tied even closer to him even as America will learn plain evidence of his crime and who knows what else
