I hate to be a Debbie downer, but this private prisons EO does....barely anything! The vast majority of people in federal private prisons are in immigration detention. Meaning the DOJ ban does absolutely nothing for them.
This EO will affect about 1-2% people in prison. So....ya know. Less than we all likely imagine.
People will say this is important symbolism. But there are people suffering as we speak in prisons (public and private) across the country. We owe them more than symbolism. We owe them more than the “narrative.”
It’s always important to know exactly what these orders actually mean and who they actually affect. However you feel about it, please talk about it honestly!
