This was the day I met Stella, then named Missy at the ARL. She was 10 years old & had been there for 6 months- after being adopted & returned for being ā€˜difficult’
I’d gone to 4 shelters looking for a dog. I didn’t want a cat. Nobody wanted her because she was mean & smelled bad
I was told I could have her for $10, they were desperate to get her out before she ā€˜ran out of time.’
I didn’t want a cat, but I didn’t know how I could live with myself knowing that her life was reduced to $10.
So I adopted her & took her home. She growled at me. She was scary
Everyone in the house was intimidated and a little bit afraid of her. People thought I was crazy for adopting her and I couldn’t disagree.
I mean, if Wilford Brimley and Shirley MacLaine had a cat love child, it would be Stella
In addition to being mean and smelly, she had skin tumors & chronic eye infections that I had to take her in to the vet to get treatment for.
It was just another reason for her to hate me
I always had a sneaky suspicion I was going to be murdered to death or if I ever went missing, this cat should be the first one questioned
We started spending more time together and I would take her out in public places
Stella was a fan of Brett Michaels clothing line for pets and I swear she made me take her clothes shopping all the time
She was pretty bossy and knew how to get her way
If she wanted something, she knew how to get it
Friends enjoyed seeing pictures that I would post of her, so I started a FB page, ā€˜Stella the Angry Kitteh’
She was embarrassed by the attention. I forgot the password anyway
She had impressive grooming habits and good self confidence for a cat that had been rejected time and again for being ā€˜smelly, mean and ugly’
I decided she was a goddam delight and she decided she hated me a little less
She enjoyed the holidays like Halloween and Christmas
Hanukkah and St Patrick’s Day were also a thrill for her
When I started adopting and fostering senior & disabled dogs, Stella was pretty cool about it.
I think she knew how important it was to give ā€˜less adoptable’ animals a chance for a new life and that other animals besides her should put up with my bullshit
Stella was the leader of The Poo Crew
She could hold her own with any dog
She loved the smell of coffee in the morning and was pretty impatient if I slept in and didn’t make it on ā€˜her time’
She loved acting all murdery
She may or may not have tried to murder me to death a time or two, but I know this cat secretly loved me
And I sure did love her.
If you could live off of spite and grumpiness, she would have lived forever.

Goodbye Stella.
You were the best $10 I ever spent, and worth so much more.
