Martha's Vineyard Regional H.S. boys basketball 1976. This team was ahead of Catherdal 22-19 after 1Q, & down only one @ halftime. Cathedral had Tom Jones, Satch Suttles, Gary Burke & Dwan Chandler (the nucleus of a 15-and-under & then a 19-and-under BNBL championship team):
@ intermission, one of the Cathedral players was heard to say (Boston Garden) "Those kids can PLAY". MVRHS had Mikey Robinson, Paul Kerns, Rory Moreis, Cliffie Robinson (no relation). My childhood pals Geo. Tankard & Dale Rogers are in this pic. All Oak Bluffs summer leaguers
The BNBL is the Boston Neighborhood Basketball League, one of the toughest, deepest summer leagues on The Eastern Seaboard back then. The Vineyard, who may have had 400 students in the h.s. in '76, gave them everything they wanted. The girls BEAT Cathedral. Like a drum
This was a year after Ronnie Brown graduated fr. the Vineyard. He was on the '73 & '74 teams which won 44 games & lost three. So was Dale Rogers' older bro. Johnny, who the @BostonGlobe named "Player To Watch" in his division, f/ the '74 state championship tourney. He could go.
Rory Moreis was a strong player on the '76 team. He went on to play at St. Thomas More of Hartford. One of the two fastest h.s. guards I ever saw. The other was Lee Lee Pope of Brighton HS. Seen both play summer league ball vs. pros
Oh, the game vs. Cathedral was f/ the South Sectional Finals. Cathedral went on to win states
After the game, some of the bros. who pl. f/ Cathedral told the Vineyard players "You played us tougher than some of the city teams we played". Cathedral had pretty much run through Boston, w/ that 15-and-under BNBL title team as its nucleus. Guys went on to cop BNBL 19-&-under
