Wrote this a while ago and was meaning to post it on ODP day back in May but clearly I forgot

Just a little message to those who ask...
1. Youâre an ODP? Whatâs that?
2. Do you not wish you did nursing instead? So you arenât limited to theatres?
The answer is...

The answer is...
1. Operating Department Practitioner, registered with the HCPC (Iâll explain more about our role below)
2. Nope, and we arenât
If anything the COVID-19 pandemic has massively proven the versatility of the ODP role and hopefully we are starting to become more well known.

As part of the Mobile Emergency Rapid Intubation Team (MERIT) we are called to A&E Resus and the wards at short notice to assist in intubation of covid patients who need to be ventilated. We also attend both adult and paediatric cardiac arrests within the hospital.
Our theatres have been transformed into intensive care units (ICU) where we care for ventilated and CPAP covid patients. We often work in main ICU to help relieve pressure on the nurses.
We are transfer trained and assist the ambulance service during transfer of covid patients when hospitals are full, or transfer of non-covid patients to specialised sites for treatment.
We are still running general emergency, obstetric emergency and trauma theatres. We have the privilege of caring for patients of all ages at their most vulnerable time, as well as happier times when we welcome new life into the world.
We have airway management skills which allow us to assist the anaesthetist pre-operatively. Most of us are trained in enhanced scrub so can assist the operating surgeon during surgery. We are also able to recover our own patients post-operatively.
Not to mention ODPs working in critical care outreach, SFA/SCP roles, PA/AA roles, A&E/Resus, education and training, information technology, endoscopy, interventional radiology and on cardiac arrest teams to name a few!
