I keep thinking about the statements from the public health officials in Australia as they discuss mandatory quarantine - they keep saying things like, "Our people made so many sacrifices, we're not going to let them down by just letting the virus back into the community." (1/n)
I don't think it could be disputed that people in Britain in general during the first lockdown obeyed the rules pretty well, as requested, apparently beyond the expectation of our own government and public health folk. (2/n)
But there have been no steps still to stop the virus coming back into the country, the talk about hotel quarantine etc is only now approaching a plan, and it's just occurred to me it's because the government don't know or particularly care what people do every day. (3/n)
Covid has essentially made no difference to them. They don't know what impact it's had on other people, either financially or physically or psychologically, and they don't care to find out or empathise. (4/n)
So we've spent a year "protecting the NHS" but ultimately they still think that anything up to intensive care overflowing is acceptable collateral damage, because after all, who are we? (5/n)
It just made me sad. The stark contrast between how adamant the public health officials in Australia were that they would repay the community's obedience to lockdown, and the tragedy we have here. (6/6)
