1) The problem with for-profit medicine is that the market operates under the maxim of “Whatever the market will bear” in regards to prices. This is wrong when it comes to medicine. Of course people will pay “whatever the market will bear” when it comes to staying alive. ⬇️
2) All things are not equal in terms of products. People won’t pay $200 for a bag of carrots. They will pay that for insulin because they have to. But the true cost of carrots and insulin is not that different. So this is a false equivalency in terms of market prices. ⬇️
3) “Are you saying prices should be regulated?” YES! If companies are unable to put their greed to rest, then it must be put to rest for them. “But they’ll refuse to invent new medicines!” Will they? And go where? Europe, where medicine prices are regulated? Come on. ⬇️
4) If a company charges $200 for carrots, someone will offer them for $2. Thus, the market does regulate prices. But this dynamic does not exist in medicine. Corporations have what I term a “hostage customer base” where people must pay the price or die. This must stop. ⬇️
5) We obviously need a national health care system that has the ability to get medicine at the real price, as Europe does. Europe doesn’t tolerate Big Pharma’s bullshit. And Big Pharma must play ball if they want to sell medicine there. It is time to bring medical justice here.
