When you laugh at a joke directed at a marginalized group , it’s because you do so from a place of privilege. Finding ableist jokes funny? You do so because you’re able bodied and unaffected by the joke. And those ableist jokes perpetuate their abuse. So, it isn’t just ‘jokes’
Jokes are words and words have meanings which lead to actions. There are so many ways to be funny. If you have to make fun of a marginalized group you don’t belong in to be considered funny, you’re not funny at all. It says a lot about you and the people who laugh with you
We’ve been seen as jokes for so long so much that when we fight for our right to exist and just be, we’re branded insensitive. We’re insensitive because we’re taking that power away. We don’t want acceptance or tolerance. We don’t even want your respect. JUST LEAVE US ALONE!!
