Growing up, the things my parents told me about growing up in 1950s Arkansas & Louisiana seemed like lies. “Some white kids chased you home?” “They threw rocks at your bus. Why?” “Ain’t no such thing as a black cemetery.” “You telling me Papa Bell’s boss kicked him in the ass?”
The thing about Hank Aaron’s death that really gutted me is the reminder that that generation of black Americans is dying off-and disproportionately so because of covid-and they’re a useful corrective on the myths and narratives many Americans tell themselves about the country

This has me thinking about how my great-grandmother, who owned a lil juke joint in the black part of Kerrville, TX, served Pepsi products.
