#pandemicpedagogy and #poliscipedagogy - what is/ isn't working this semester? I'm going to track my weekly reflections on here for accountability, and would love to hear what others are observing and thinking through...
Week 1- The normalization of death and the medicalization of student life from intro week last semester to intro week this semester is profound. Yes, all these things were happening before, but it is now openly discussed with new people as the norm.
Week 1- And, students changing their home/ work/ schedule / etc as possible. I'm leading with empathy and flexibility but that only flattens access and success so much. And, they are collectively so ready to critique and change the ugly realities of the world around us.
Week 2- all extrapolation conversations- Why generalize when knowledge is situated? How do we de-exceptionalize the US case and US based knowledge? How do we learn ab places we aren't familiar with and might not be able to catch problematic generalizations? 🔥🔥 #pandemicpedagogy
Week 3 in #PandemicPedagogy - small but key change from last semester- consistent breakout room groups for 4-5 weeks in discussion classes. Already hearing it helps make up for the informal ways learning and community happens in person (and residential!).
Week 3- useful ideas on format and (what I should have been more intentional ab last semester) matching format to pedagogical goals here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1I2_Q0nmdM-IQojuxifQQgKxCFAtOR1gK/view
Week 4- students have refreshingly little patience for what is. Lots of conversations about reimagining, creating, and experimenting.
And a week 5 rant- Faculty can't "plan and communicate" our way to excellent teaching and learning at all times (no power! cold! snow! pandemic!). That assumes we know what students are living and learning through- we don't (sometimes, but our teaching shouldn't rely on it) ...
and shouldn't ONLY plan for learning of students whose situations we understand. Let's assume difference and work to facilitate accessible learning for scenarios we don't know about.
