Hot D&D take: I object to the entire notion of “adventurer” as a career choice, and settings where it does exist as one are fundamentally broken and don’t really obey any internally grounded rules. In most D&D settings there’s simply no reason for common people to exist at all.
2nd Hot take: responding to this with “that’s what suspension of disbelief is for” or “it’s a game, don’t think so much” is kinda the same as being told to “Shut up nerd!” When I was a kid, it either stands up to nerdy critical analysis or it doesn’t, and becomes jock stuff.
