Took a CRT class in college called "The Problem of Whiteness" and it was one of the scariest experiences I've ever had. Let me elaborate. Spoiler: it was white people that were scary. 1/10
Fox News picked up on it because the Republican student organization at my school reported it. It was part of the news cycle about how universities are creating reverse racists and liberals and are destroying the fabric of America. 2/10
It was a once/wk, 1 section class with 13 ppl, mostly Black and Hispanic. I think there were maybe 1 or 2 white kids. At no point was my prof contacted to talk about the class, nor were any students, though a few of us reached out to reporters - no one wanted to talk w us. 3/10
My professor and his family received thousands of death threats and a neo-nazi group went into his neighborhood and began knocking on doors/leaving flyers everywhere calling him a race traitor and calling for his death. 4/10
His TA hosted an impromptu unofficial lecture to discuss race and CRT, everyone was welcome. Because it was on campus and unofficial he somehow "broke the rules" & people were screaming for his dismissal. To avoid bad press, he promptly was fired & removed from his program. 5/10
When class reconvened we had to have police surround our building because of the threats to bomb the class and kill us. We spent the whole class unpacking what we were experiencing. 6/10
By the next week the news cycle had moved on. My prof still had to deal with death threats for a while, but those fell off too. We continued our class, learned about CRT & bc of the demonstration at the beginning of the year, we knew even more how necessary this class was. 7/10
You know what convinces people CRT is essential to talk about? Racism. Conservatives convinced me more than any liberal I know that I needed to take this class. When my life was threatened over a 3 unit class, that pretty firmly made me believe I was on the right side. 8/10
It wasn't about convincing me to drop the class, or ascribe to conservatism. It was about making my class an example of what happens if you go against white power. 9/10
So don't come at me condemning CRT. That class was the most beautiful & meaningful class I've ever taken. I felt loved even as the racism within me was exposed & held accountable. The people in that class valued life. The people condemning CRT wanted life destroyed. 10/10
This thread is getting a lil bit of attention so here are some
