Chief Medical Officer Chris Whitty warns death toll is still going up.

“Unfortunately we’re going to see quite a lot more deaths over the next few weeks before the effect of the vaccine is felt”.
Asked by @PaulBrandITV about 100k Covid death toll, PM says he could “exhaust the thesaurus of misery”.

Not sure that’s *quite* the tone the bereaved might hope for.

He adds: “It’s an appalling and tragic loss of life”.
I asked @BorisJohnson whether, as we’ve approached this sad milestone, he has spoken to families bereaved by coronavirus. Does he ring them up privately or meet them on Zoom?

“Of course,” the PM replies, without giving any detail whatsoever. Would be interested to hear more...
PM also declined to answer my question about why the Government wasn’t giving NHS staff in England a £500 bonus, as they did in Scotland, in recognition of all they have done during the pandemic.
Pressed by @SamCoatesSky if he'd "truly" done all he could to avoid death toll - or if he could've followed scientists' advice more closely - PM says: "We did everything we could to minimise suffering and loss of life in this pandemic and I'm deeply sorry for every life lost."
