1) After the ascendance of Christianity, which eventually became the Roman state religion in 380 AD, Augustine had some witty barbs on what he saw as the quaint ideas of polytheism:

"We Christians laugh when we see all these different gods assigned their own specialised tasks..
2) "Everyone sets a single doorkeeper in front of his house to guard it; he is human, and quite adequate for the task. But Romans in the old days would post three gods there: Forculus to watch the door, Cardea to watch the hinges, and Limentinus to watch the threshold!"..
3) "Obviously Forculus was quite incapable of watching the hinges and threshold as well as the door! Pagans are like workers in the silver quarter who, in making one little pot, pass it through the hands of so many craftsmen when it could have just been made by a single expert."
From St. Augustine, 'The City of God', completed in 426 AD. #roman #religion #paganism #christianity #philosophy
