This is completely unfair, particularly as Muslim communities that are already disadvantaged in education and wider society are adversely affected by it.

The pandemic only serves to intensify these challenges for Muslim students; those who save up their own money to fund tuition fees, or rely on parent’s income, are facing difficult circumstances. (3)
In 2014, the Government supported the consultation for an Alternative Loans System which would be compliant to Sharia law and therefore suitable for Muslim students.
They assured us this would be implemented by 2016. Now, six years on, we have seen no progress or movement. (4)

Today, we have written to Education Secretary @GavinWilliamson to insist they prioritise these issues faced by Muslim students, commit to a date when the system will be implemented, and dedicate resources to make it happen with a matter of urgency. (5)

Young people should not miss out on higher education simply because the discriminatory funding system doesn’t align with their religious beliefs.
