1/ Hey, #MedTwitter! Happy #TriviaTuesday!

Which of the following carbonated beverages historically contained a psychoactive substance which is today only available by prescription?
2/ 7-Up is probably the best answer, though technically a) you can prescribe cocaine for anesthetic purposes and c) tonic water today does not contain treatment-dose quinine.

Let’s take a closer look!
3/ We’ll start with cocaine...err, Coca-Cola. And we thought high-fructose corn syrup was addictive!
4/ The origin of the name “7-Up” is truly a nerd’s ( @AdamRodmanMD) dream.

And one must wonder if lithionated beverages weren’t a brilliant scheme to induce polydipsia and boost sales.
5/ Finally, tonic water has changed a good deal since the Panama Canal was built. Current restrictions limit quinine content to 83mg/L - an order of magnitude less than it once contained.
7/ To recap: we used to love to put meds in our bevs. Coke had cocaine, 7-Up had lithium, and tonic water had whopping doses of quinine.
