There are lots of areas of hockey ops the Sens can be questioned on but the most egregious failure (over a fairly long period of time) has been their pro scouting. Just a long list of guys who most casual fans could identify as washed when acquired.
There's basically 3 categories of pro players the Sens acquire.

1) The reclamation projects (Duclair, Galchenyuk etc). These are fine mostly because it's understood as a roll of the dice and not done very often.
2) The veteran grit/leadership acquisitions (Burrows, Gudbranson, Watson, Oduya, Coburn, Hainsey etc). These guys are almost always on the cusp of playing their way out of the NHL so whatever intangible value you're getting is destroyed by the fact that they can barely contribute
3) The "this guy used to be good but we seemingly haven't paid attention to what they've done in the past 2 years" acquisitions (Brassard, Stepan, Boedker, Murray, Anisimov etc). These are the most infuriating. There's a reason their team wants to drop them.
And a more recent trend with the last 2 coaches is "guy that used to play for the coach a number of years ago" (Pyatt, Dumont, Didomenico, Sabourin, Haley etc). These are just lazy and seem to bypass any kind of rigorous talent evaluation.
