1. #AnimBehav2021 Hello! I am thrilled to share our #BeeResearch Project of #GroomingBiting behavior of honeybees with you today. My name is Hongmei Li-Byarlay, an Assistant Professor at @CentralState87 #PublicHBCUofOhio #TrainBlackinAnimBehav I hope you enjoy these tweets.
2. #AnimBehav2021 Honey bees (Apis mellifera) as a #Super-Organism live in a colony with thousands of worker bees and a collection of compelling social behavior. One defensive behavior against parasite mites is grooming or biting behav. Video credit Dwight Wells & Price Smith
3. #AnimBehav2021 A worker bee can attack the mite by holding it with forelegs and bite the legs of the mite with bee’s mandibles. Purdue University bee lab has selected this biting behavior for a decade and their stocks are called Indiana mite biters.
4. #AnimBehav2021 Damages of mites from these colonies can be the extended phenotype of the behav. We collected mites in 2018. HBCU outstanding undergrad researchers Jada Smith(in pict) and Xaryn Cleare helped to place mites on slides for a thorough inspection under the microscope
5. #AnimBehav2021 The data showed a significant difference in biting rate among the three populations.
6. #AnimBehav2021 Furthermore, we used HeliScan microCT @CEMAS_OSU to scan the 3D shape of mandibles btw mite biters and commercial bees. The long edge of the mandible appeared to be sig different!
7. #AnimBehav2021 We have to thank @CentralState87 all the students Jada/Xaryn/Kaila who helped on the project, our awesome technician AshleyCordle and @PurdueInsects @Harpur for their hard work. The ms is in review. Our preprint https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/2020.12.07.403147v1
9. #AnimBehav2021 Our current research is investigating this behavior in feral honey bees in Ohio. We'll be glad to collaborate with other researchers who have access to feral colonies in other parts of the U.S. The pict here is a feral colony in Central Ohio.
