Omg i think i just figured out why people dont like self driving cars.
People dont like to think theyre not in control of their destiny.

Theres a number for that. Carefully assessed and backed by data because they want to invest your premiums for profit and need a level of risk assurance.
Now the numbers show that self driving cars are far more safe than human driven cars. And its only going to get more safe

But people dont like the idea that a car is deciding how to drive. Regardless of the data.
The data objectively points towards if you choose to drive your own car, you choose to endanger your life or raise you risk level considerably. But thats not the way our lizars brains work

Our brain sees (hypothetically) that with self driving cars, we could expect to see lets say 5 deaths in a given state a month. But self driven cars could expect to cause 30 deaths per month.
Automated fate.
Automated fate.
This self driving car guarantees a survivability rating of 99.99%. And you have 0 control over that.
And thats wheb we lose our minds.
Were okay losing games of skill. Because thats up to you, your performance, and your training.
But games of chance are different

And a self driving car to people equates to a game of chance. Even though the odds are wayyyy better than the game of skill people want to play.
I remember a video with richard feynman talking about machines being better than humans at all kinds of tasks, but humans being better at others. Visual patterns are hard. But thats not the only thing self driving cars do.
Can you, a human, always accurately know the exact distance various objects are aroubd you? Can you accurately and within thousandths of a second calculate the chabfe in speed, distance, acceleration various objects aroubd you are travelling?
Can you a human tell exactlh how much brake pressure is needed to stop in rainy conditions so that you stop at the right distance behind the car in front of you and also dont caise the car behind you to rear end you?
Can you, a human, tell exactly how much of a steering adjustment is needed to avoid being hit without losing control of your vehicle? Hell, humans have issues just staying between the lines.
Face it, computers are better data gathers, processors, and executors of actions

Not only this, but a computer doesnt get distracted. Its not interrupting its calculations and decisions to check twitter, listen to an audio book, or space our while staring at the sky and pavemebt for hours.
It also doesnt get frustrated by 4 hour traffic jams. It doesnt get emotionally compromised due to a traumatic experience. It doesnt get so happy about an event theyre going to that it forgets to stop at that light. Ooops.
But if you were to tell someone they have a 00.0001% chance of not making it back once they step into a car they have no control over, they lose their minds and prefer to drive themselves despite increasing their odds of fatality by 10x or more. (I dont know the actual #.
So humans are scared that they dont get to control their fate. And i think that plays into a lot of decision making that ends up making our fates worse than we want them to be.
