It is a human right to expect #UniversalHealthcare to include access to symptom management and compassionate support if we are sick enough to die, regardless of our location.
Carefully-laid plans and personal preferences are lost without joined-up care. This includes early identification & timely planning, staff skilled in care-planning conversations, and joined-up records.
It is a human right to choose when and how to plan our health care, including our #EndOfLife wishes. This means we need honesty & compassion in being told if our prognosis is poor, & skilled support with planning of care that can be delivered in our preferred place.
Most of us don't need hospital care while we are dying, but we do require adequate physical & emotional support, practical help & support for our companions. Investment in community services is urgently needed to allow people to have real choices.
Death is not a medical failure but the universal outcome of life. Health & social care professionals require training, experience & support to deliver the skilled care we should all receive at the end of our lives.
Quality of care should be measured and regularly reviewed. Proxy measures like place of death are inadequate: we need to understand the real experience of dying people to preserve & improve high-quality care.
The UK's national medical research budget allocates only 20p in every ÂŁ100 (read that again!) to palliative & end of life care.
We need to address this lack of parity and esteem for an area of healthcare that affects us all.
