I don’t want or need Black women to be on the nation’s money. I need the nation to put its money on (invest in the needs of and leadership of) Black women. Good morning.
For all my both/ands: I’m saying I don’t think it’s a fitting way to honor her and it’s mildly insulting. You used to be property. Now you’re money? Ugh. Also: the investment in our communities is the main thing. And that’s what i’m interested in. That’s all.
Let me thread the needle fully: one way to think about slavery is that Black people were treated as legal tender. Get into debt: sell a Black person (usually away from their family). Now we are putting a formerly enslaved person’s on legal tender. That just feels perverse.
