Yesterday, @theresecoffey claimed to @susannareid100 & @piersmorgan that it is the UK's ageing and obese population that led to its shocking covid death rate. This is untrue and here are some examples: [1/6] Canada's population is older:
As you probably know Canada has a much << Covid death toll per capita than the UK. Even Toronto, with ~7 times higher population density than the UK covid mortality per capita is dramatically lower. [3/6]
In terms of age (which is the biggest risk factor, far larger than obesity), it's not only Canada that is older. In fact the UK relatively speaking is a younger country compared to many. Here is a bunch of countries that have less old people than the UK [4/6]
All of these countries have dramaticaly lesser covid death tolls than the UK per capita, although they are all older. [5/6]
@theresecoffey's off the cuff claims are unsubstantiaed, unfounded and simply dangerous to make, especially for a minister on national television. She needs to immediately apologise for this shocking blunder. [6/6]
