🚨New UC stats out today. What do they tell us about the impact of coronavirus and the resulting jobs crisis?

Firstly, claimant numbers are still increasing steadily - almost double pre-covid. Furlough is keeping the full impact at bay for now but we're some way from the peak.
This release shows that the 'work, not welfare' argument in the context of the uplift debate just doesn't hold.

39% of UC claimants in Nov were working. Removing the uplift will hurt those who need it, whether in work or out of work. #KeepTheLifeline
Younger adults have been hit particularly hard. This likely reflects the fact they were more likely to work in shut down sectors, at higher risk of redundancy, and are finding it more difficult to find work after leaving education.
Finally, we see variation across regions with London hit particularly hard.
