The liberalisation of gambling laws is one of the worst things New Labour did during its time in office. https://twitter.com/jburnmurdoch/status/1090589650299817989
Found this old tweet whilst looking through my bookmarks. Its pretty striking.
A reminder that the gambling industry (like the alcohol industry & like the nascent Cannabis industry in North America) make their money by milking addicts/heavy users & this is something that New Labour helped to facilitate via the liberalisation of our gambling laws.
All these types of industries (that we used to categorise under the heading of ‘vice’) make the big chunk of their profits by milking addicts & so don't be under any illusions that this is precisely what will happen if/when Cannabis is ever legalised here https://twitter.com/AlcoholChangeUK/status/1032507729154166791?s=20
This is why you have libertarian think-tank policy-wonks, who are de facto lobbyists for these types of industries, constantly fighting tooth & nail to prevent things like MUP coming to 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿. Anything restricts heavy users from using hits these industries in their profits hardest.
All these types of industries - gambling, alcohol, Cannabis - make their money via milking addicts, which usually means milking the poor/disadvantaged. This is why anyone who consider themselves to be left-wing or progressive should NEVER encourage them or get into bed with them.
Dont be fooled. There is nothing ‘liberating’ about liberalising laws pertaining to drugs, alcohol or gambling, don't mistake ‘liberation’ for the unleashing of more misery. This is where these industries profits - alcohol, gambling, cannabis - come from. https://twitter.com/peter_g_miller/status/1185279821321891840?s=20
So many progressives have managed to meme themselves into believing that the the liberalisation of drugs laws is a progressive idea. There is nothing progressive about this.
