The chaos witnessed in Delhi today is a result of a government that is so steeped in arrogance that it kept farmers waiting in the cold on the borders for two months and merely indulged in lip service. It did nothing to diffuse the situation.
When it should have put forward Rajnath Singh to talk to farmers, it put it’s most arrogant face, the debit-credit guy Piyush Goyal to negotiate. You can capture all the institutions but you cannot force people to submit like you force journos to tweet on likes and paghadi.
The clash today in places is condemnable. The violence by some farmers on cops and on some farmers by cops are distressing. This situation could have been avoided had the govt truly wanted. A strong government doesn’t end up creating chaos on the streets. It tries to avoid it.
