Learning is the priority but two things children are also missing right now are organised physical exercise and seeing their friends, both key to mental and physical health, motivation and sleep. So as a first step back, perhaps schools could reopen for outdoor activity 1/n
If this were just primary schools, which are lower risk than secondaries, and outdoor only it would be fairly safe. Eg an hour of running round the playground every day, with their friends, in their year/class bubble. Maybe an outdoor PE lesson 1-2 times a week 2/
Yes, it would need logistics for both teachers and parents. But schools are already doing playtime and PE for key workers. And for parents, most families live near primaries due to admission policy, so those already at home could do a drop off for an hour 3/
It would be a lifeline for children, regular fresh air and exercise and seeing friends (rather than yet another daily walk around local park with a parent), which would make them fitter, happier and more willing to learn. And a little break for parents too 😀 4/4
PS for those saying it’s too dangerous now: I said first step back. Doesn’t have to be next week, but when cases are lower. 3 mitigating factors - outdoors, primary setting, bubble system. I’m very wary of reopening schools too soon when transmission is high.
