Interesting what is happening in Denmark🇩🇰 with the mink farmers, after yesterday an historic center-right/left deal passed that will compensate them for the eye-rolling amount of 18.8 Billions danish kr (2.5 B euro) . This has implications for climate change policy too (thread)
Long story short: the Danish gov close all mink farms and ordered disposal of the animals in Autumn '20 to prevent the spreading of a Covid variant. This decision was taken in a hurry and the legal ripercusstions are still unclear. It also basically obliterated an entire industry
However, seems like the Danish mink industry was not in that good shape after all, with many farmers operating at a deficit and with large debts (in fact, about 8 B of the entire compensation will be to pay for such debts) - also, the industry is generally ethically problematic
Most of today's comments can be summarised as :
- if we can find so much money for such a problematic industry, how comes we can't find them for climate change related issues (green transition)? (and obvs also social welfare, etc. but not my focus here)
- If we can close dangerous industries in a health-emergency, why can't we close polluting/carbon intensive ones in a climate emergency?
- If this is the size of compensation needed for a relatively small industry (0.X% of total BNP that employs 0.00X% of population), what would be the compensation for much larger industry? (pig farming mentioned as closest example, and meat industry is relevant climate-wise)
So again, we should follow closely what happens here because we might have to see and experience more of this as the climate crisis worsens - some carbon intensive industries will have to close, be reformed heavily, and likely compensated.
