1) Why is LA reopening when we’re still in a heartbreaking, deadly, terrifying surge? They told us safer at home would stay in place as long as ICU capacity is below 15%. It’s at 0%. Our hospitals are completely overwhelmed.
2). A loved one just had emergency open heart surgery. He was released after just 4 days (normal stay for that is 7) because, quote, “he’s safer at home because of covid.” Guess what, he wasn’t. Got a totally predictable complication and is back in the hospital.
3) When the hospitals are overwhelmed, we are ALL in danger. And this is such a slap in the face to HCWS. They are SUFFERING. Exhausted. Traumatized. But suddenly, we're cool? Open the nail salons? Because it's not like things are great here --
4) Over the past week, the county has averaged 8,343 new cases and 202 new deaths per day. The number of confirmed infections is currently doubling every 89.7 days. And now we have multiple more contagious and possibly more deadly variants? NOW'S a good time to open?!
5) We were told to get out of the purple tier, our adjusted daily case rate per 100K needs to be 7 for 2 weeks. It’s currently at 75. I'm a TV writer, so maybe math isn't my thing... but 7 doesn't seem too close to 75?
6) And now they’re basing their decisions on secret data?? What happened to full transparency? https://apnews.com/.../sacramento-california-coronavirus...
7) We've been here before. We rushed reopening in the summer and that was a disaster. https://www.latimes.com/.../how-rushed-la-reopening.../
We need to stop with these half measures that just prolong this endlessly.
8) Look, I get it. The economy matters. Small businesses are suffering, and so are people without paychecks. Which is why we need the federal government to help -- to pay people to stay home. But you know who else is suffering? Our kids.
9) Our kids who have been out of school for ELEVEN MONTHS. Kids who are getting no socialization. Who are suffering severe depression. Many of whom rely on school for safety and food. What kind of society prioritizes keeping the mall open over schools? Over children?
10) And you know who else suffers when you open back up willy nilly? Frontline workers. Who are dealing with people coming into their stores without masks, endangering their lives. Where is the enforcement on masks? Why is no one doing anything about that?
12) And if your argument is, the workers want to go back, consider this. Just how great is this really for restaurant servers? One of my close friends is a server. She was on unemployment in the beginning of the pandemic. Went back to work in the fall when outdoor dining opened…
13)...for less than two months before it shut down again. What happens to her now? Will she have to leave unemployment… again… to go back to her job again… for how long this time? One month? Less? Will she even qualify for unemployment again when that inevitably happens?
14) The worst part is… we KNOW how to end this. N95s for the whole population. Cheap rapid tests deployed to homes for the whole population. And a HARD LOCKDOWN to bring infections down. Please, stop it with the half measures and LISTEN TO SCIENCE.
