That said, I worry that this approach places tremendous burden on those who were victimized by the very people they’re now asked to not just forgive but actively do emotional labor to guide back to polite society. 2/3
Reconciliation can’t happen without justice, and forgiveness often can’t happen without an honest accounting of the pain the perpetrator inflicted. There are deeper problems inherent in white supremacy and extremism to deal with before a simple message of unity can succeed. 3/3
