I spent my teens + early 20s in Toronto before moving here, and I just moved back from Vancouver. Calgary is a great city, but there are glaringly obvious reasons we don’t attract young people: 1. Our transit system is severely lacking. In Toronto, I took the TTC everywhere. https://twitter.com/donbraid/status/1353867149933113346
In Vancouver, it cost me just over three dollars to go from my downtown apartment to the airport. 2. Creating walkable communities with density and amenities beyond supermarkets. 3. We need to be a more diverse city and we need to showcase that diversity. That also means
forcefully calling out hate. 4. We need to recognize that young people care about the environment and our policies and discourse need to reflect that care. 5. We need to invest in post-sec.
6. We need to invest in education and healthcare so young people aren’t scared of starting a family here. 7. We need to get serious real fast about diversifying and stop treating one industry like it is the panacea to our problems so all sorts of people can find jobs here.
8. We need to invest in art and entertainment. Culture is so important to tons of people and this constant negativity around any investment in art here is not helpful.
I moved back to Calgary because I love the can do spirit and I think it has so much to offer. But we can and must do better.
