Some thoughts I have as a new screenwriter:

Be kind to yourself. You're probably not good at this yet. That's normal. There are people here who've been doing this for decades. It's unlikely you'll be that good that quick, and that's ok. 1/
Being a novel writer ≠ being a short story writer ≠ being a screenwriter ≠ being a poet. These are all different forms with a different art to them. Some stuff will translate. Some won't. Dedicate time to study each. 2/
Try new things. Yes, you may have heard that you need to find a brand, but how will you do that if you haven't tried things out? Don't limit yourself too much at the start. 3/
Oops I was compiling this for myself but sent it too early. I guess I'll go on. Create opportunities for yourself when you can. Network. Participate. If you can't join a group, make a group. 4/
Write. Write terribly. Write until you can finish. Your first few scripts may be pretty bad. That's okay. You're going to get better. Again, give yourself time. 5/
Enjoy it. Don't start out thinking "I have to be in this industry." Start out exploring. Start out being open. Start without expectations. Then go from there.
