Being an academic tutor is really changing how I think I will approach teaching in the future, especially in terms of how my reading material relates to the class. I don't really have systematic observations yet, but one thing I can say, is ...
that while students may complain that "the Professor just lectures from the textbook," this complaint may be one that we should not cater to. e.g. I have been recommended to have readings that supplement and compliment the lecture, with major themes of the readings being ...
the subject of lectures, but I think this makes the relation of an intro textbook (and I think this is probably the key part of the observation, that it is for textbook-based courses) a bit too loose for the textbook to be useful review material. So, in the future...
I will more tightly integrate the textbook into my course.
...even if it feels 'repetitive' and could risk dipping into the 'but he just reads the textbook in class' (which, obviously I would not 'read' it). Also, I can't wait to get back to lecturing in person so I can use the whiteboard instead of powerpoints.
