Every time I suggest something public can be privately funded I have a "nightmare scenario" described to me that is almost an exactly accurate reflection of the current public system as it is now.
"Warlords will take over"
"Who will build the roads?"
"The education available to the average person will be subpar compared to that available to the wealthy!"
"Billionaires will own everything!"
"People will ruin environmental ecosystems with no reprisals!" https://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-way/2015/08/10/431223703/epa-says-it-released-3-million-gallons-of-contaminated-water-into-river
"Violent Gangs and Local Mafias will roam the streets"
"Local warlords will extort the public." https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/wonk/wp/2015/11/23/cops-took-more-stuff-from-people-than-burglars-did-last-year/
In all likelihood, the very terrors you fear are being perpetuated en masse by the government you want to empower and in ways that private endeavors could never hope to replicate.
