Here's my debris flow evacuation & prep update for the day, please share:
https://www.santacruzsentinel.com/2021/01/25/evacuation-orders-issued-in-santa-cruz-mountains-and-the-north-coast/

I dug a bit further into how the County has short-term prepared for the heavy rains predicted to hit the SC Mts. on Tuesday afternoon & learned a lot.

THREAD⬇️
1) Three temporary shelters have been set up, that will not offer sleeping arrangements inside, but evacuees may arrange for car camping-type setups.

The County told me if people are still struggling to source overnight accommodations, speak with @RedCrossNorCal onsite.
2) @SantaCruzSO1 will continue door-to-door evacuation noticing, for residences under current evacuation orders.

In a worst-case scenario, where weather conditions prevented authorities from going door-to-door, authorities will issue a Wireless Emergency Alert.
That's the type of alert that flashes up on your phone with a loud noise, and is coordinated by the National Weather Service.

Also, stock up on batteries for your radios, folks. That's tried and true.

Power outages from wind could be an issue in notifications in coming days.
3) @CALFIRECZU Unit Chief Ian Larkin, who is also the Santa Cruz County Fire Operational Area Coordinator told me he's successfully ordered a rescue task force through CA Mutual Aid for the potential debris flows.

What does that mean?
The task force is made up of 30 specially trained rescue and recovery personnel, from different fire agencies, including one specific task force from Marin County Fire Department.
“In the event of a debris flow, if folks did not leave, that team would go in once its stable and start looking for victims,” Larkin said.
“They have dogs that can sniff out human remains and detect where there’s life, where someone may be pinned in cavity, and help locate victims to do a rescue or recovery,” Larkin said.
4) What is Public Works doing to keep the roads clear?

Matt Machado told me they'll activate their Department Operations Center Tuesday afternoon, a call and dispatch center.

You can report road issues/ blockages using this number: 831-477-3999.
The department has staged some heavy equipment in Swanton and Bonny Doon. Public Works also has contractors on call, ready to assist.

“We are prepared to respond to anything and everything,” Machado said
Please heed evacuation warnings and orders people.

In 1982, at least 10 people died in the SC Mts. in the Love Creek slide.
UC Santa Cruz Distinguished Professor of Earth Sciences, Gary Griggs said "The cost of evacuating when you’re not sure is simply a little bit of time to get some food, clothes, book a hotel room for $200, and get out, versus losing your lives."
I'll be back tomorrow afternoon for the @scsentinel, taking the late shift so I can follow how things unfold into the evening.

Stay safe everyone.
