I think you should carry a gun the way you wish to carry one. I carry openly for a number of reasons as I've stated in https://digitaldropzone.com/why-i-open-carry/, but one is absolutely to engage the public. A good example is a trip to the store last week.

I don't pretend I look unarmed, and don't want to either. I want them to know. My Glock sits high in an enormous Safariland, has a grip tape wrap, wml, magwell, and magazine extension. It's extremely ostentatious for police (so we don't have to talk about it) and 2/7
threats (aposmatic deterrence). It also serves another great purpose. It engages the public. So I'm looking for beans at the store and a woman abruptly stops me (I got a friendly face and somehow invite this often). She asks me if she can ask me a question. "Of course" is 3/7
the answer I always give. She asks what I had to do to get a concealed carry permit. I point out the obvious that I'm not concealing this and then begin a discussion about the laws, requirements, how she can go about finding a handgun, buying ammo, and where she can get 4/7
training. Now I don't usually place the race shit here online for clout because it is typically a clout driven tack, but this woman was far different from me. This conversation had no chance of happening if I hadn't open carried. I ended up giving her my phone number so that 5/7
