The conversation surrounding HP is really biking down to textualists vs. meaning makers. The textualists are calling for a culling of all trademarked Wizarding World stuff. Meaning makers already leaned into organic community rather than sanctioned WW.
What this means is, textualists think that people are refusing to give up being book Ravenclaws (very smart and studious) because that's the sum total of that person's personality, instead of standing up for trans rights.
When in reality meaning makers have discord servers devoted to defining and refining what it means to be a morally grey Slytherin and organising mutual aid for fellow Slytherin's who are in need.
Until y'all stop defining yourselves by Slyvia Plath, the March sisters, Holden Caufield, and the dude from On the Road Again, I'm gonna need you to employ critical thinking skills to the HP fandom.
Because it's not just part of literary canon, it's part of cultural canon. We have to cut off JKR's income AND we have to reckon with the fact that is woven into people's identity and institution's foundations. We don't separate the art from the artist
We teach our kids (and ourselves) that art can become a thing of its own, but its roots must always be critiqued and even cut away if they threaten the integrity of the people around.
