I just had an interesting exchange.
Domenich: Biden so radical
Person A: Yeah. Affirming roe v wade
Me: affirming a 50 year legal standard is by definition not radical
Person B: but they are very anti-abortion so they think it is
Me: 50 years
1/
B: but they thing the court has been extreme liberal all that time.
Me: OK but it’s still the status quo. affirming the status quo, even if the status quo were “extreme liberal” is by definition not radical. Wanting to overthrow the status quo is.
2/
-Here’s the kicker

B: they don’t see it that way. They see themselves as the status quo

AND THIS IS EXACTLY IT.

The right-wing evangelical white world view is considered by right-wing evangelical white people to be status quo at all times.
3/
To them, everything that veers from their world view is a “radical” threat.

This is what Sarah Palin refers to when she talks about “real America”. This is what NYT, etc caters to when they talk about “the heartland” and make field trips to Trumper diners. 4/
This is why we do not have nice things.

Not only they, but the general cultural zeitgeist is that white evangelical right wing Christians are the base, the core, the “real America” and everything else is a revolt against it.

5/
It must be understood that though the founding of the US and many laws throughout US history installed white Christian men as the owners of everything, they are not actually “real America”.

6/
We have been here THE WHOLE TIME and we are not unreal. We are here. We are American. And this is our country. We are REAL AMERICANS.

and the most essential radical change needed in America - the one that other good changes follow - 7/
Is the recognition that white evangelical right wingers are NOT “the real America” any more than everyone else in this place is.
Once we get that straight, we can get some realistic discourse about what to do next.
