Notes have been summarized. All that's left is to crack a beer and........ #NFLDraft https://twitter.com/DanMeehan90/status/1353788361761239040
I will preface this by saying I watched 12/13 games during Mond's junior season at A&M last year and this is primarily based on ~5 games from the 2020 season.
To start, I believe it's important to remember the pedigree that Mond had coming to College Station. He was the #1 Dual-Threat QB recruit in the nation (Via Rivals) when he arrived on campus in 2017.
His physique and athleticism are reasons people (myself included) believe he could be a sleeper. He's 6'3" and ~220. With enough athleticism to allow him to be slippery in the pocket and extend plays with his legs outside of it. Very valuable for today's NFL.
However, that being said, he shouldn't be compared athletically to someone like Trey Lance in this class.
Mond also has a relatively good (above average) arm. He can make some off-platform stuff happen and seemingly gets velocity to areas of the field.
However, he tends to be all over the place and is more than a bit hot and cold with his accuracy and ability to stem together consistency within his game.
It almost looks like with how he throws that he's got the motion of something like a shot-putter or heavy weight lifter. It's really stiff and almost robotic.
His footwork needs fine-tuning and sometimes I feel like his upper and lower halves are working against each other and not in unison causing him the fits with accuracy issues and hot/cold streaks.
This leads me to a huge frustration with him as a prospect that I'd dub a "draft crush" of mine & hope he gets in the right situation. He consistently got better, but never made a real "leap." More minor strides, but nothing to write home about. More maturation in the system?
Also worth noting his processor is a bit wacky, if not a tick slow. These are all reasons for his fall and needing to return for his 4th and final season.
In order for him to potentially fulfill what he should vs. what he could be, he's going to need to invest in himself and ironing out the minor details (which I do believe he's wired right) as much as the team that would be drafting him.
Overall I think he could go as high as the back-end of round 3, but more likely in round 4/5 depending on who likes the traits. I like him as a fit in Chicago, KC, Buffalo or potentially Indy.
Summation: Mond is an athletic, streaky QB with really good tools and a base of traits. He needs to work on consistency within his delivery, footwork, processing, etc in order to fulfill those gifts and a team may have themselves a gem.
