We know absolutely nothing about him but we know so much. We know he's caring and cares for those who he has no connection with. He cares and he doesn't get anything out of it. He sees Kat who's a helpless mother and he forms an instant connection with her.
Maybe because he had a similar experience with his mom. Now ik his backstory is kept very mysterious but Nolan has said that enough is in the script for you to get some idea. He also stands alone in a twilight world believe there is no one at his back.
Only to find out he had a friend this entire time who not only was his best friend but took a bullet for him.
At the end when he saves Kat she has no idea that her life was saved. Coming back to the idea of him saving people and getting nothing back in return. No closure or anything.
