#Comcast owned #Sky knows its time’s coming. Today the European giant announced a massive slate of 125 productions, lots of original movies and series included, to be released during 2021, more than a production a week. A clear message to #Netflix and #WarnerMedia’s #HBOMax.1/6
Sky faces 2 threats: the advance of #Netflix & #DisneyPlus in Europe & prospects of losing rights over WB/HBO library in the future when the current deal, renewed in 2019, eventually expires & #HBOMax can finally launch in its markets.
The only way: content, content, content.2/6
Since 2019, Sky has picked up their production of originals, and has even built an entire studio complex in London. The 1st bunch start coming out in 2021 already. Sky’s strategy is clear: using HBO&WB library while building their own portfolio. And that’s a risk for #HBOMax 3/6
When the deal between #Sky and WM expires and #HBOMax can finally hit The U.K., Germany, etc, Sky might be an even bigger competitor than now, and with #Netflix & #DisneyPlus already so strong in the continent, it may be difficult, almost impossible, to succeed in the future, 4/6
Without knowing it, WM created a #KingKong that in some point in the future it might have to fight against. Under risk of being killed by it. The only way to go: Content, content, content. By then, #HBOMax’ll need to have built a strong catalog of originals focused in Europe. 5/6
Or, as #Sky’s content manager #ZaiBennett said today, WM will simply have to keep selling content rights to Sky instead of trying to compete with it, which has been Warner’s choice for 11 years. But it’s before Europe became a key market for any “subs” exponential increase. 6/6
