With rank lists for #Residency being due soon, I thought I’d make a little 🧵of advice for #NeuroMatch2021. Note, this is not a one size fits all but maybe it’ll help you figure out how you are going to rank. #NeuroTwitter #NeuroTwitterNetwork #MedTwitter #NRMPMatch @NMatch2021 1/
1. Make a list of your priorities.

Before you even rank your residencies, think about what your top 3-5 priorities are. Location? Research opportunities? Subspecialty exposure? Family-like atmosphere? Prestige/Name? Class size? Focus on that as you make your list. 2/
2. Be aware of advanced programs.

Most neuro programs are now categorical, but note that if they have advanced option, you have to rank that separately with an attached prelim. You wanna make sure you have a prelim that you want and that it gives you good IM training. 3/
3. Remove programs that you hate.

If you’d rather not match than go to a program, take that program off your list. It’s not worth it. Trust me. 4/
4. Remember that the match is in your favor.

Don’t think too hard about the system. Most neurologists will match with the majority into one of their top 5 programs. As long as you think you’ll be happy there, rank it accordingly. Don’t think about how they’re gonna rank you. 5/
5. You can let your number one know they are your number one. But be sure about it.

Programs talk to one another so don’t tell multiple places you’ve ranked them high. It’s okay not to send any messages to any program if you want to stay safe. 6/
Also, in reference to above note, programs may not respond back if you send them a letter of interest. Or they might give a vague answer. Don’t read too much into this. A lot of places have a set policy not to send messages that can be misinterpreted. 7/
6. When in doubt, do a gut check.

At the end of the day, most of the programs are going to give you the education you need to become a neurologist. You just need to pick the place that works for you. Go with your gut. Imagine opening your envelope on Match Day. 8/
Heck, you can even have someone make you an envelope with a program name on it and you can open it. See how you feel upon seeing the name of a program. It may help you decide how much you want to go there. 9/
If I think of others, I’ll add on. Feel free to comment with any questions and I’ll try to answer them as best as I can. And hopefully on Match Day, you’ll be as emotional and excited as I was when I matched into my top choice, @TjuhNeurology 10/end
