Two years ago today, about 250 lives were lost in the collapse of a mining dam in Brazil. The tragic loss of life, along with a history of failures from the engineering design of the tailings dam, led to Brazil... [1/7] https://twitter.com/i/status/1353764027877511168
...(Brazil is definitely NOT a strong protector of lives or the environment) banning these unsafe dams. They didn't simply ban new dams, but they're actually removing existing dams of that design... [2/7] @FriendsBWCAW
Yet in Minnesota, the design of the PolyMet mine tailings dam - the same type that has already been banned in Brazil - was granted a permit by the Minnesota DNR... #ProveItFirst [3/7]
This despite a DNR consultant saying the PolyMet dam plan gives him “severe indigestion because a lake on top of a pile of sand is inherently unstable and irresponsible." [4/7] @MCEA1974
In summary: 1. Brazil bans this type of mining dam, after 250 lives lost. 2. DNR consultant calls Polymet dam proposal "inherently unstable and irresponsible" 3. Yet Minnesota has given a permit to go ahead with the project? [5/7] https://twitter.com/i/status/1353764027877511168
Is this outrageous? Or doesn't it become outrageous until 30 or 40 years from now there is a tragic collapse here (or MN taxpayers pay billions of dollars to dismantle the dam and search for a new way to store the billions of tons of toxic waste)? [6/7] @DuluthWater #mnleg
It's time for the DNR to heed the comments of its consultant & recognize that Brazil is acting more responsibly than they are.
It's time for the DNR to withdraw its dam permit. #ProveItFirst [7/7] https://twitter.com/i/status/1353764027877511168
