UK Prime Minister & his government will tomorrow agree on on mandatory hotel quarantine for either *some* or *all* passenger arrivals — we’ll find out tomorrow.

One year into the #COVID19 crisis. 3 lockdowns, and over 100,000 fatalities later.

A thread. 👇🏽✈️
Aviation is a vector for #COVID19 transmission (people from A to B, and on to C) . This policy does not change that.

The government still need to outline a long term strategy to have Air Travel + COVID19 coexist with measures, such as a sufficient testing regime, in place.
One year ago, I held several discussions with foreign governments, most concluded: coexistence is key.

Air travel + #COVID19 can coexist if measures are in place

Why does UK insist on having an ‘all or nothing’ approach with air travel? It’s disastrous for the aviation sector.
Majority of countries with mandatory hotel quarantine for arrivals introduced the policy almost 1 year ago, including: Australia 🇦🇺 NZ 🇳🇿 Taiwan 🇹🇼 Qatar 🇶🇦 Hong Kong 🇭🇰 Korea 🇰🇷

And yes, all figured out how to keep people fed, watered, etc — this is not a challenge unique to UK
Airlines in countries with hotel quarantine policies receive dedicated, sector-specific state aid.

Financial support to wider aviation sector (not just airlines) is even more urgent — they’re fragile & suffering following the way in which #COVID19 has exploded across Britain.
Furthermore, with so much focus on keeping variants out... measures are required to stop UK exporting the new strain.

40+ countries have cut air travel ties with UK, there’s never any mention of this in government?

One foreign leader described UK as “exporter in chief” #COVID19
If UK’s policy is for ALL arrivals — a limit on number of daily arrivals will be required in order to not overwhelm hotel capacity

This is why any policy should be clearly communicated, in advance, to prevent anyone being locked out of their own country (see Australia). #COVID19
Pilots & crew will be exempt — but UK *still* does not test crew, unlike other countries.

If hotel quarantine is to keep passenger arrivals in a bubble, that bubble bursts once a crew member (who mixed with passengers) enters a supermarket, having not been tested. #COVID19
During this next phase, measures (testing, screening) must finally be established so that UK can manage inbound/outbound passenger flow without it all ending in lockdowns, or shutdowns, etc.

— and while the industry waits for that, financial support is needed - urgently. ✈️
